  15. 1) CD-ROM / Video Performance Problems
  16. ================================================

  18. NOTE: To avoid damage to the CD-ROM, do not remove it from
  19. your CD-ROM drive while it is in use (usually indicated by
  20. a light on the CD-ROM drive).
  21.  
  22. You might be able to enhance video playback performance in 
  23. a number of ways:
  24.  
  25. 1.  Increase the amount of buffer memory that your CD-ROM 
  26. driver software uses.  Most computers communicate with the 
  27. CD-ROM drive through the Microsoft MSCDEX driver.  Such 
  28. systems can sometimes be accelerated by adding /M:32 to the 
  29. MSCDEX entry in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  See your CD-ROM 
  30. documentation for more details.
  31.  
  32. 2.  Ensure that you are using the latest video driver for your 
  33. video board.  Contact your video board manufacturer for more 
  34. information.  You may also be able to get updated drivers from 
  35. CompuServe or Internet in either the Microsoft forum or in a forum 
  36. managed by your video board manufacturer.  Also see the \DRIVERS 
  37. directory on this CD-ROM for a number of Microsoft-provided 
  38. video drivers.
  39.  
  40. 3.  Check Windows Setup (usually in the Main group of the 
  41. Windows Program Manager) to ensure that you are using a 256 
  42. color video driver.  Video playback is slower in both 16 color
  43. mode and any video mode with more than 256 colors.  Video 
  44. performance may also be improved by running Windows 
  45. in 640 by 480 resolution if you are currently using a higher 
  46. resolution.
  47.  
  48. 4.  If your computer has only 4 Megabytes of memory, you 
  49. should consider purchasing an additional 4 Megabytes for a 
  50. total of 8 Megabytes.  Additional memory will significantly 
  51. increase performance for all applications on your system.

  54. 2) Video Display Problems
  55. ================================================
  56.  
  57. 1.  16 color mode
  58. This application runs in 64 color mode but, due to the full-motion
  59. video playback, we strongly suggest using a 256 color video mode.
  60. Many computers are factory-set to a 16 color mode although the 
  61. video board is capable of 256 colors.  The setup program should 
  62. correctly warn you if you are in 16 color mode and suggest 
  63. a remedy.
  64.  
  65. 2.  ATI video boards
  66. This product is incompatible with some features of the ATI
  67. Mach32 video system. This video board comes with a number of
  68. popular systems including most Gateway 2000 machines.  The 
  69. problem is not with the board itself, but with the Mach32 video 
  70. driver software, so it can be resolved in at least two different
  71. ways (note that suggestion "A" will provide the best performance):
  72.  
  73. A.  Run the ATI Control Panel application that comes with your
  74. video board.
  75.          i.  Ensure that you are running in the 256 color mode. 
  76.         ii.  Click Advanced Features and ensure that the 256 
  77.              Color Palette option is turned ON and Device  
  78.              Bitmaps are OFF.  See the ATI documentation 
  79.              for more details.

  81. B.  From the Windows Setup application, choose a different video 
  82. driver such as the 8514/a driver.  See your ATI documentation 
  83. for more details.

  85. ================================================
  86. 3) Audio Problems
  87. ================================================
  88.  
  89. This application requires that an MPC-compatible sound board 
  90. is installed in order to play sound.  It will not function with
  91. software that uses the computer's internal speaker to generate 
  92. sound (such as "PC Speaker").  Such software will usually
  93. not play any sounds and could cause your system to crash.
  94.  
  95. To resolve other audio problems:
  96.  
  97. 1.  Make sure that the volume for your speakers is set to an 
  98. audible level.
  99.  
  100. 2.  Your sound board may be set up incorrectly if you still do not 
  101. hear any audio.  Check to see if the audio driver that came
  102. with your sound board is installed correctly and, if necessary, 
  103. reinstall it.  See the documentation that came with your sound
  104. board for more details.
  105.  
  106. 3. If the quicktime movie sound plays incorrectly, start the
  107. Quicktime Control Panel (Control Panels are situated in the Main
  108. Program Group). Click More / Audio.
  109.  
  110. 3a Select "Automatic Rate Adjustment" (lower left) if this is not
  111. already selected.
  112.  
  113. 3b For "Requested Hz" select "default" from the drop-down menu.
  114.  
  115. 3c Click on "Close" and "Yes" to apply your adjustments.
  116.  
  117. 3d Restart Windows!
  118.  
  119. 3e Run the calibration movie "sample.mov", which you will find in
  120. the Windows directory.
  121.  
  122. 3f Start the Quicktime Control panel again, and click More / Audio.
  123.  
  124. 3g De-select "Automatic Rate Adjustment" (lower left).
  125.  
  126. 3h Take note of the rate values for "Requested Hz" and "Actual Hz",
  127. which may have been altered by the calibration run you did under 3e.
  128.  
  129. If these are still 'default', you have a good sound card that plays
  130. audio accurately at 22050 Hz, and generally both 11025 and 44100 Hz 
  131. sound will also play well. If numerical values have appeared,
  132. the Requested rate should be 22050 Hz, and the Actual rate should be
  133. close to 22050 Hz. The further away the Actual Rate is from 22050,
  134. the less accurate your sound card is. If so, you may experience sound
  135. problems in other products as well, and you might want to consider
  136. replacing your sound card.

  139. ================================================
  140. 4) "Out of Memory" Problems
  141. ================================================
  142.  
  143. This application uses your computer's memory to display 
  144. pictures and video.  Performance will be degraded if your system
  145. does not have enough free memory.  If you receive Out-Of-Memory 
  146. errors, you probably do not have enough free memory. Consider 
  147. taking the following steps:
  148.  
  149. 1.  Close all unnecessary applications.
  150.  
  151. 2.  If you are running Windows in Enhanced mode (the default 
  152. mode if you are running Windows on a 386 or better machine),
  153. create a permanent swapfile  on your hard disk. See your
  154. Windows documentation details.
  155.

  157. 5) Windows NT
  158. ================================================
  159.  
  160. Microsoft Windows NT is incompatible with the Microsoft
  161. Video For Windows drivers that this product uses.
  162. You will need to run this product with a Windows 3.xx system.
